Sporting Helmets
Carefully engineered helmets are key to preventing sports injuries.
While each type of helmet is tailored to common injuries that arise from playing a specific sport, all helmets share a common goal:
* Minimize forces in the head and neck, and reduce accelerations of the brain.
Excessive helmet weight can do more harm than good in terms of sports injuries. It is in our best interest to help sporting helmet companies reduce excessive weight on a player’s head, even by means of something as small as fasteners.
Football Helmets
Football helmet features a hard outer shell, inner padding and lining, facemask, and chin cup. They can optionally be worn with a visor.
We investigated the number of fasteners used on a football helmet and identified that we can replace 8 fasteners (no visor) and 12 fasteners (visor).
POSSIBLE WEIGHT SAVINGS
No visor: 6 grams
